If you are expecting a read that is full of anger, and blame and depression, then you will be disappointed. This book is an outline of the life of one survivor of this virus, and the legacy that remains after survival. It is hoped that it will encourage others with this, or other afflictions to see that there is always a life to be led. It may be far from the life you may have wished for, or indeed the life you might choose, but it is still a life, and hopefully with a sense of humour that shines through.
This story has not reached its conclusion as yet, as there may well be hurdles to jump in the future, but for now this is the living history.
This account is written in the victim's own words, as he lived it and as he viewed his life. It is a personal account.
...'On the first day the nurse asked "any pain?" to which I replied politely "no thank you".
I really was not intending to make her laugh, I was half conscious I think at the time, and was just answering the question as I had heard it ..'

A short read, more like a conversation with a friend who is just telling you his experience with living with a devastating disease. It just flows and takes the reader right along with it. His adventures, full faced joy in what life dealt him is inspiring. If it weren't for the occasional near death situations he would mention, one would never know he had an illness. Definitely not a pity party in this book. Very entertaining and highly recommended.Product details

Be The Best You Can Be polio my constant companion eBook Michael B Reviews
I'm not sure what I expected before reading this story. I thought that it may have been one full of medical terminology describing how the author lived with polio. I found it was a tremendously inspiring story that draws you in as you witness the ups and downs in the author's life and how he coped with and survived everything thrown his way. I love stories that remind us all that we can do anything and this one surely does.
This is the courageous yet ordinary sounding life of someone whose circumstances made everything harder. Michael has not allowed Polio to stop him from doing anything he wanted to do, from riding a bicycle to running successful businesses. In fact, his businesses became so successful he sold them on and took up other challenges. The account has a cheerful, upbeat quality that defies anyone to say that Michael is any different in his achievements, loves, hopes and aims than the next person. He has outshone many in his efforts and determination to succeed in anything he does. Well done Michael. Your message that anything a person wants enough is achievable, no matter what personal obstacles stand in the way, comes across clearly.
I couldn't put down this account of Michael B's determination to live as normal a life as possible following recovery from childhood polio. The story struck a chord with me as I recognized the struggles two of my childhood friends also faced as they grew up in the sixties with disabilities left after their survival from the disease. People my age will recall the vaccines and the iron lungs that many a patient spent months and sometimes years in. This is a very brave story and one that's told from the heart. I would highly recommend you read it, if only to be thankful that we've come a long way in the prevention of this awful disease that claimed so many young lives and left even more people struggling with varying degrees of disablement.
Michael B. is a man who was afflicted with polio at a young age but went on to have a meaningful life. Rather than feeling sad or sorry for himself, he drove himself to excel and to take on very much the life he would have had without polio. He is far more adventurous than me! I relate very much to the times in which this man grew up; he is a few years older than me, and he is from the U.K. where I am from the U.S., but I nodded constantly as he described music, movies, and other aspects of life in the 1970s and 1980s. This is the sort of man whom others will find inspirational. He really has done it all, overcoming pain and obstacles to have a full life. Because of my respect for the author's achievement, I am giving the book four stars.
The book is told in the style of a good storyteller. It reads like listening to an entertaining man talking at a bar or a party. Aside from comma splices (joining two complete sentences with a comma), which don't annoy most people as much as they do an English teacher like me, it is written in articulate, clean English. This is not the work of a professional writer, but of a very intelligent and charming man telling his story in plain language. There is a lot of detail; Michael B. has strong recall of people and personalities. That said, I would like more scene and less summary. I would like detailed portraits of people and descriptions of important moments between Michael and the important people in his life. I would also like an improved cover. A photograph of the author as a young man would be a tremendous alternative.
This book was given to me by a friend as a review copy. My friend has good taste in books! Thanks for the chance to read.
I applaude him for the attempt to tell his own story, but do wish he had had someone to help him with it. In my judgement, it is poorly written. Yet, as I said, I give him an A for effort. There are less and less us polio-survivors left to tell our stories, not only of our initial experience, but of the ensuing years and especially of the boomerang effect of the Post-Polio Syndrome. It is amazing how few people are even aware of post-polio, and they need to be.
It was definitely motivational and optimistic. Not too much life advice tho. Clearly, He has been through quite a bit!
It was a very unexpected read for me. I usually don't read non-fiction but Michael's story drew me in from the first page. It is an amazingly honest story of a man who never gave up. This book will deeply touch you and make you ask questions about yourself. What would you do if you were Michael? Would you be able to cope and remain true to yourself? Or would you become bitter and angry? The writing is very strong, flawless and motivating. It is a must read!
